Baluchi rugs are small, sturdy tribal rugs with bold geometry and a soft, glossy wool. They bring a lot of character to a little space.

Who weaves Baluchi rugs?

Baluchi rugs, also spelled Balochi or Baluch, are woven by Baluch tribal weavers whose homeland stretches across parts of Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. For generations their rugs were made for daily life: floor covers, prayer rugs, bags and tent hangings, woven on small looms that could be moved with the family. That is why most Baluchi rugs are small, and why they are so tough.

The rugs in our collection are hand knotted in Afghanistan from wool, following the Baluch tradition of geometric design.

How to recognize a Baluchi rug

  • Small sizes, most often 3x5, 4x6 and 5x7, plus prayer rugs and runners.
  • Geometric motifs: stepped diamonds, small guls, stars and stylized trees, often repeated across the field.
  • Traditional colors of deep red, navy, brown and ivory, sometimes with touches of purple or orange.
  • A soft, glossy wool with a slightly irregular pile that feels good underfoot.
  • Prayer-rug layouts on some pieces, with an arch (mihrab) at one end.

Modern Balochi colors

Alongside the classic reds and blues, today's Balochi weavers work in brighter, more playful colors: purple with blue, orange with green, rust with gray. The geometry stays traditional, but the palette suits a modern boho or eclectic room. Our collection has both, so you can choose a rug that reads as classic tribal or as a bold accent.

Baluchi vs Bokhara and Khal Mohammadi rugs

All three are tribal rugs from the same region. Bokhara and Khal Mohammadi rugs use rows of large Turkmen guls on a red field and come in room sizes. Baluchi rugs are usually smaller, with a wider mix of motifs and colors. Read our Khal Mohammadi guide and Bokhara guide to compare.

Where a Baluchi rug works best

A Baluchi rug is a perfect accent: in an entry, beside a bed, in front of a fireplace, under a desk chair or at the kitchen sink. The dense wool holds up to traffic and the busy pattern hides dirt. Layer one over a larger neutral rug or sisal for a collected look; our layering guide shows how. Each rug in our Baluchi collection is one of a kind.
