Khal Mohammadi rugs are some of the most recognizable rugs from Afghanistan: deep red, glossy wool and rows of bold tribal guls that look just as strong in a modern room as in a traditional one.

Where the name comes from

Khal Mohammadi rugs are woven in northern Afghanistan by Turkmen weavers, in a tradition that goes back generations. Dealers trace the name to Khal Mohammad, a master weaver whose rugs set the standard for the style, and today it is used for rugs woven in that manner. In the trade you will also hear the name "Biljik", and many of our pieces carry both names.

How to recognize a Khal Mohammadi rug

  • A deep red field, from bright brick to dark burgundy, sometimes almost black-red.
  • Rows of guls: octagonal tribal medallions repeated across the field, often in the "elephant's foot" shape.
  • Accents of navy, black, ivory and orange drawn in small geometric details.
  • Several narrow borders framing the field, with geometric motifs that echo the guls.
  • A high sheen: the hand-spun wool has a natural luster that makes the red glow.

Our Khal Mohammadi rugs

The rugs in our Khal Mohammadi collection are hand knotted in northern Afghanistan from hand-spun wool. Most are deep red with black or navy accents, and some come in red and blue. We carry small 3x5 accent rugs, room sizes up to about 8x11 and a strong selection of runners from about 2'7" x 6' to more than 12 feet long. Each rug is one of a kind.

Khal Mohammadi vs Bokhara and Baluchi rugs

All three are tribal rugs from the same part of the world, so they're easy to confuse. Bokhara is the broad trade name for rugs with repeating Turkmen guls; a Khal Mohammadi is a finer, glossier member of that family. Baluchi rugs are woven by Baluch tribes and tend toward darker browns, blues and purples with smaller, more varied motifs. Read our Bokhara rugs guide and Afghan rugs guide to compare.

Where a Khal Mohammadi rug works best

The strong red and bold geometry make a Khal Mohammadi a natural focal point. A runner brings warmth to a hallway, kitchen or stair landing, and the dense wool pile stands up well to traffic. In a living room or study, a red Khal Mohammadi pairs with leather, dark wood, brass and white walls, and it gives a modern room with simple furniture a strong anchor. The repeating pattern also hides everyday wear well. See our hallway runner guide for sizing.
