A large, lacy blue trellis covers a pale beige field. The small repeat reads as texture from a distance and as pattern up close. It is an oriental transitional 10x14 area rug in blue and beige.
This one-of-a-kind, handmade wool rug is hand knotted from hand-spun, natural vegetable dyed wool, a blend of merino, New Zealand, and Ghazni wool. The vegetable dyes, extracted from local plants, color the blue field and the beige border, with gray and tan in the details. Look for the abrash, a gentle shift in shade within a single color. It tends to show most in larger areas of one color, such as the blue field here, and it happens because hand-spun wool takes natural dye a little differently from batch to batch. The trellis is knotted by eye, so each repeat is very slightly different from the next. After knotting, the pile is trimmed to a moderate thickness, then stone-washed and sun-dried, which gives this 10x14 rug its natural sheen. The result is a dense, even wool pile that feels soft underfoot, springs back under furniture, and stands up to everyday foot traffic. Because the pile lies in one direction, the blue field looks a little deeper from one end of the rug and lighter from the other.
It holds a full living room seating group, a dining table for six to eight, or a spacious primary bedroom. The cool blue and beige palette, with touches of gray and tan, suits coastal, Scandinavian, and contemporary rooms, where it reads as a calm accent. The fine lattice reads as tailored, which suits transitional and classic-modern rooms.
