A diamond trellis of small blossoms covers a red field, set inside a shaped black border of flowers. The small repeat reads as texture from a distance and as pattern up close. It is an oriental transitional 10x14 area rug in red and black.
Hand knotted and one of a kind, this wool rug is made from hand-spun, natural vegetable dyed wool, a blend of merino, New Zealand, and Ghazni wool. The red of the field and the black of the border come from vegetable dyes extracted from local plants, and blue and tan pick out the smaller motifs. You may notice an abrash in the red field, a soft shift in shade within a single color. It comes from hand-spun wool taking natural dye slightly differently from batch to batch, and it is one of the signs of a true handmade rug. The trellis is knotted by eye, so each repeat is very slightly different from the next. After knotting, the pile is trimmed to a moderate thickness, then stone-washed and sun-dried, which gives this 10x14 rug its natural sheen. What you get is a dense wool pile with a soft hand, low enough to sit neatly under chairs and doors and sturdy enough for busy rooms. Because the pile lies in one direction, the red field looks a little deeper from one end of the rug and lighter from the other.
It holds a full living room seating group, a dining table for six to eight, or a spacious primary bedroom. The warm red and black palette, with touches of blue and tan, brings a boho chic, eclectic feel to a room and pairs well with leather, walnut, and brass. The fine lattice reads as tailored, which suits transitional and classic-modern rooms.
