Medallion vs All-Over Area Rug Designs: Which Is Right for Your Room?

Most handmade rugs follow one of two layouts: a central medallion, or a pattern that repeats across the whole field. Knowing which suits your room makes choosing much easier.

Medallion designs

A medallion rug is built around one large central motif, often with matching corner pieces and a strong border. The layout is symmetrical and formal, and it draws the eye to the middle of the room.

  • Best for: living rooms with an open center, foyers, and rooms with a round or glass coffee table.
  • Watch out for: a big sofa, bed or dining table covering the medallion. If the center is hidden, the rug loses its focal point.

All-over designs

An all-over rug repeats its motifs across the whole field with no single center. Bokhara guls, Kazak and Mamluk geometrics, and many floral designs are all-over patterns.

  • Best for: dining rooms, bedrooms, family rooms and any room where furniture covers part of the rug.
  • Why it works: the pattern looks complete from any angle, and it hides wear and everyday marks well.

How to choose

  • Look at your furniture plan. If the middle of the rug stays open, a medallion shines. If furniture covers it, go all-over.
  • Think about the room's mood. Medallions feel formal and traditional. All-over designs feel relaxed and work in more styles.
  • Consider the size. In a small room, a big medallion can feel crowded; an all-over pattern reads calmer.
