The entry is the first room guests see and the place that takes the most dirt. A good entry rug sets the tone for the house and catches grit before it reaches the rest of your floors.
Measure the gap under your front door with it closed. The rug, plus its pad, has to clear that gap when the door swings open. Flat-woven kilims and low-pile rugs fit under most doors; thicker hand-knotted rugs may need to sit just past the door's swing.

Choose dense hand-knotted wool or a sturdy flat weave. Darker grounds and busy patterns, like Kazak geometrics or traditional all-over florals, hide dirt between cleanings. Save pale, plain rugs and silk for rooms with less traffic.
Put a coarse doormat outside the door to catch the worst of the dirt, vacuum the entry rug twice a week, and rotate it every few months. A rug pad stops it sliding on tile and stone. Entry rugs usually need a professional wash every two to three years.
