Hardwood floors and handmade rugs are a classic pairing. The two things that matter most are contrast with the wood and the pad underneath.
Our room color guide goes further into pairing rugs with walls and furniture.

A good rug pad protects wood from grit that works through the rug, stops sliding and adds cushion. Choose a pad made for hardwood, such as felt and natural rubber. Avoid cheap PVC or plastic pads, which can react with some floor finishes and leave marks.
Sunlight darkens or lightens wood unevenly, so a rug that never moves can leave an outline. Rotate the rug every six months and move it a few inches now and then. Lift the rug and vacuum the floor underneath a few times a year, and never put a rug on a newly finished floor until the finish has fully cured, usually several weeks.
Hand-knotted wool rugs are ideal: they are heavy enough to stay put and soft enough to quiet footsteps on hard floors. Flat-woven kilims are lighter and need a grippy pad to stay in place.
